  • Would you like to plump up your lips?
  • Want better looking lips?
  • Thinking about getting lip fillers?

What are Lip Fillers?

Lip Fillers are Dermal fillers used by talented Aesthetic Doctors and Cosmetic Nurse Injectors to help plump up your lip area, even out your smile or fill-in thin or uneven lips. There are a wide range of acid-based gel-like fillers and are usually the same dermal fillers or “volumisers” that are used in other areas of the face to increase facial volume, restore lost volume and help fill in or reduce deep lines or skin creases.

These gel-like volumisers consist of a thick hydrating fluid that is naturally found in the connective tissues of your body. Dermal fillers are temporary, which makes them an effective, attractive and safer choice for lip plumping than some other permanent products or surgeries.  They are non-animal, scientifically stabilised products that also contain a local anaesthetic, to reduce discomfort and inflammation during the injecting process.

Most new injecting patients are surprised that injections are not uncomfortable to get – because of the effects of the local anaesthetic AND because our top team at Coco Ruby know all the tricks and secrets of injecting in the least uncomfortable way.  Ask YOUR injector how they suggest minimising discomfort during a procedure – and you’ll likely find out that having good injecting skills for dermal filler is part of having a more comfortable injecting session. A highly skilled injector can also do a lot to prevent tenderness and bruising after fillers, although every patient IS different and you may have some of these transitional side effects, especially if you are prone to bruising or have sensitive skin.  It’s important you know what to do to prepare for your injections session and for AFTER care once you’ve had dermal fillers including lip injections, so be sure to ask for details.  Some patients even find rapid recovery products, like arnica, or even zinc, may be valuable – ask your Nutritionist or Injector for details about what patient’s say about good injection preparation strategies.

Why do you need Lip Fillers?

As you age key proteins in your body required to give structure and volume to the lips and the skin- elastin, collagen, and hyaluronic acid gradually decline. Lip filler injection is a non-surgical cosmetic method of enhancing shape and restoring the volume of the lip and giving it a more natural youthful appearance. In addition to age-related processes, lip fillers can be used effectively to restore volume in naturally thin lips that are out of proportion with the rest of the face.

Am I a good Candidate for a lip filler injection?

Lip filler injection may be the procedure for you if:

  • You want to add volume to your lips
  • You want to restore fullness and add projection of your lips
  • You want to achieve an aesthetic balance between your lip and the rest of the face.
  • You want to get rid of fine lines around your lips
  • You are realistic about what the procedure can do for you.

Book a consultation today if you are any of the candidates mentioned above for the procedure.

What are the Benefits of lip filler?

It helps restore the youthful contour of your lips.

  • It helps add restore fullness and projection of your lips
  • It helps achieve a pleasant balance between your lips and the rest of the facial features.
  • It helps minimize fine lines above and below the lips.
  • The results are immediate and easily reversible.

You should discuss your expectations and assess the benefits of undergoing a lip filler injection with a trained practitioner before going through with the procedure to see if the procedure is the correct fit for you.

The Procedure Involved in Lip filler injection

  • The sites of filler injection are marked with the help of a removable ink skin marker.
  • A local anesthetic is then applied to numb the filler injection site.
  • After the effects of local anesthetic starts, which leave the area numb, the filler is injected into the dermal layers of the vermillion and/ or the mucosa through fine needles. Fillers are injected as per your requirements.

The procedure generally takes about 20-30 minutes to complete, depending on the location and amount of the filler to be injected.

Minimal to no downtime is required following the procedure. A bit of bruising, swelling, and numbness may be present around the site of injection immediately after the procedure. These symptoms gradually subside over few days. Applying ice to the site of swelling or lump formation can help reduce it faster, however, much pressure should not be applied at the treatment site.

You should not indulge in any vigorous activity for at least a week following the procedure. Prevent sunlight exposure of the injected part. You should avoid smoking for few weeks following the procedure, as smoking has shown to considerably slow down the recovery process. Also, you should avoid taking alcohol and salty food for up to a week after the procedure. Avoid using lipsticks until the swellings completely subside.

You should be able to notice changes immediately after the procedure but the final results of the procedure will be appreciated only after swelling and bruising from the area subsided.

Your Lip Filler Journey at Coco Ruby

1. Your Consultation

During your consultation, which is the first phase of your lip filler journey, you will have an in-depth discussion with your plastic surgeon about the procedure, and if you meet the criteria to undergo the procedure.

Before undergoing the procedure the practitioner will take your detailed medical history and will discuss your goals for the procedure. You need to be honest about your expectations with the practitioner. This can help you in getting your desired outcome. Your practitioner will show you many before and after photos of the procedure, which will help you decide if you want to go through with the procedure.

You are expected to avoid smoking a few weeks before the surgery along with aspirin and other anti-inflammatory drugs which increase the chances of bleeding. You should strictly avoid drinking alcohol 24 hours before the procedure.

2. The Lip Injection procedure

This is the second phase of your journey. The sites of filler injection are marked with the help of a removable ink skin marker. A local anesthetic is then applied to numb the filler injection site. After the effects of local anesthetic start, the area becomes numb, the filler is then injected carefully into the dermal layers of the vermillion and/ or the mucosa. The procedure which is done on a daycare basis usually takes about 20-30 minutes to complete.

3. Recovery after Lip Filler

What do lip fillers or lip plumping injections actually do for your lips?

Lip fillers plump the lips, increasing them in size (volume) or even changing their shape by selectively placed volumisation fillers.  Lip fillers, done by an experienced Clinician, can also help to correct smile asymmetry, define the lip border, and differentiate the size and shape of the top and bottom lips.  Cosmetic injections to lips using good injecting strategies may give you a lovely pout-enhancing or smile-balancing effect – which has an impact on your overall facial appearance.

  • Lip fillers can actually improve your overall facial appearance by giving it a more youthful look and more balance between the different areas of your face.
  • This varies from person to person but if a high-quality product is used, you should only need your lips injected once a year.

With slightly plumper lips, the fine lines above and around the lips start to become less apparent. This is yet another reason lip enhancements have a facial rejuvenation effect – they leave your lips and the area around your lips looking just a bit younger in a subtle way that actually helps to improve your entire facial appearance.

Muscle Relaxants for Lips: Lip Injections using Wrinkle or Muscle Relaxing Injecting Products

A small injection of muscle relaxant injections along your upper lip can also help stop the upper lip from curling under when you smile. This is an alternative to lip fillers for patients who have substantial lip volume and shape, but their top lip disappears when they smile. An example of this lip injection strategy is shown in the image below.

Lip Filler FAQs – Best Questions about Lip Fillers

What are lip fillers?

  • Lip filler injection is a non-surgical cosmetic method of enhancing shape and restoring the volume of the lip and giving it a more natural youthful appearance.

What is the difference between lip filler and lip injections?

  • Lip injections are procedures done to enhance the shape and volume of the lips whereas lip fillers are substances that are injected through the injections to restore volume.

How long do lip fillers last?

  • Every patient varies. In general, your results from getting lip plumping injections should last between approximately 9-12 months. Sometimes its a bit less and sometimes a bit longer. It can readily vary depending on what injection brand is used as well as the injecting strategy for lip plumping.
  • Results following injection of fillers are not permanent. The compound present in the filler, hyaluronic acid gets absorbed naturally by the body, so the injected filler fades slowly over time. Usually, the fillers last for up to a year, but as the lip is frequently used for different functions, the durability of these fillers may be much lesser in some. You will require multiple injections to keep the voluptuous look of your lips.
  • A good injector will get you a subtle but aesthetically pleasing enhancement and will avoid having you look like your lips have been over-filled or over-injected. Note the natural-looking enhancements in the sample before and after lip plumping injections photos, below, using a quality dermal filler injected by Senior Injecting RN, Sandra Wallace (Hawthorn).

What are over-filled lips?

  • Thin lips are not as alluring as fuller lips, but you don’t want to go too far either. Read our blog to learn how to avoid going overboard with lip filler!
  • That’s why our Injectors take such great care in the planning of your lip volumisation injections – to be sure they suit your current lip shape, facial shape and overall appearance without looking ‘overdone.’

Can lip filler be removed?

  • In cases that you do not like the results or want to restore your previous lip appearance, you can get the filler removed by scheduling an appointment with your practitioner. The practitioner will inject an enzyme called “hyaluronidase” into the site where filler was injected. The enzyme accelerates the breakdown and absorption of hyaluronic acid-a a key component of lip filler.

What should you not do before lip filler injection?

  • You should avoid taking blood thinners such as aspirin a few weeks before the procedure. Also, you should refrain from consuming alcohol at least a day before the procedure. Following these simple rules can reduce the chances of post-procedure bruising considerably.
